Flexi Handbuilder — Ceramics Studio

Location: Mechelen, Belgium

Start: At least 1 day per week, preferably during the week

Come work with me in my ceramics studio 

I’m looking for a skilled and enthusiastic handbuilder to join me in my cosy ceramics studio in Mechelen.

The main part of your role will be handbuilding the ceramic bases for my pet urns. These are pieces that require a good eye, a steady hand and a feeling for clean, balanced shapes. I’m looking for someone who already has experience working with clay and is comfortable working independently.

You don’t need to know everything about running a ceramics studio — I’m more than happy to teach you. What matters most to me is that you have a good foundation in handbuilding, take pride in your work and are eager to learn more.

What you’ll be doing

• Handbuilding the bases of pet urns according to the shapes and techniques I use in the studio
• Creating clean, consistent and well-finished forms
• Working independently once you’re familiar with the process
• Preparing and handling your work carefully throughout the different stages
• Helping with general studio tasks when needed
• Gradually learning more about how the studio works and potentially taking on more responsibilities over time

I’m looking for someone who…

• Has experience with handbuilding ceramics
• Has a good feeling for shape, proportion and clean finishing
• Can work independently and carefully
• Is reliable and hardworking
• Is eager to learn new techniques and understand more about the studio
• Is comfortable working in a small, personal studio environment
• Enjoys a good cup of coffee ☕
• Doesn’t mind the occasional bit of yapping while we work

The atmosphere in the studio is cosy and relaxed, but the work itself is important to me. I’m looking for someone who can enjoy the nice parts of working in a creative studio and who is motivated to get things done properly.

The practical side

I’m looking for someone who can start with at least one day per week, preferably on a weekday, with the possibility of taking on more days as the collaboration grows.

The idea is that you’ll start by learning the process and making the urn bases, and over time, if it feels like a good fit for both of us, you can become more involved in the day-to-day workings of the studio.

This is a flexi position, based in my studio in Mechelen.
